gretzky is the greatest ever

Gretzky, the ... ( 4 months ago by Bleeney)
Gretzky, the so-called "greatest player ever" had a +/- below zero SEVEN times in his career. He was great offensively, but a lousy defensive player. He was thoroughly incapable of playing any sort of physical game. Guys like Howe, Lindsay and Richard would have chewed him up and spit him out in the 50s, when there were no "enforcers" to protect the weak. Back then, you fought your own battles. If you couldn't, you were gone. Orr would dominate any era. Unlike #99, he could play it any way.

im not going to argue that orr was a more well rounded player but there is no doubt that gretzky had the greatest hockey mind ever. so he wasn't tough, last time i checked you didn't get a goal for kicking a guys ass. gretzky was the greatest offensive force of all time. you only have to look at the impact he had and continues to have on the game to know that he is the greatest player of all time.
No one can deny ... ( 4 months ago by Bleeney)
No one can deny that Gretzky was an offensive genius. But he had the luxury of being the most protected player ever. He operated in a "cocoon." Compare him to other superstars. Orr retired a cripple. Howe's face took over 500 stitches. Hull looked like a model when he broke in, but ended up looking like Frankenstein. Gretzky retired with barely a mark on him. How? He avoided contact, didn't backcheck, block shots, dish out hits, or protect his teammates. He's the best one-way player in history.
Orr would have ... ( 3 months ago by EAGLEVIEW08)
Orr would have killed him if the refs weren't there to stop it. Orr was much tougher than anyone expected because no one expected the greatest hockey player to be a good fighter as well. He would have killed Magnuson if the refs let him...Old School hockey rules!

Um. Nope. There's a Habs fan making pro Orr statements on youtube. And the Canadiens were the rivals to the Bruins. Not to mention Gordie Howe, among others, says Orr is still the greatest.

well howe didn't play against gretzky so he's just saying what he believes
everyone says their generation had the best
No. I'm saying this ... ( 2 months ago by daface77)
No. I'm saying this as someone who did grow up in the 80s watching Gretzky and Lemieux. Orr was to hockey what Bruce Lee was to martial arts or the Beatles were to Popular music. Unmatched revolutionaries. Howe was actually a generation before Orr who had a long, long career.
Howe did play in ... ( 2 months ago by daface77)
Howe did play in the WHA (Whalers) and Gretzky was on the Oilers. This was just prior to their respective organizations moved to the NHL.

anyone got the video of Bobby banging his friggin head on the ice the year Magnuson came back from karate lessons?
nah, orr, if made a ... ( 1 month ago by caesarcerf)
nah, orr, if made a forward would EASILY out-do wayne's stats. if in the HYPER strong league of 70-71 Orr could make 102 assists, think of how degraded gretzky's 163 look in a league where even grant furher, a goalie, had points. orr was better defensively, better offensively, more important to his team, (or the canadian national team), there is simply no comparison.
if orr competed in ... ( 1 month ago by caesarcerf)
if orr competed in the 80's (and i take no position regarding fighting being good or bad) he would have had more than 163 assists. orr is to hockey what the beatles were to popular music as daface77 says. the perfect analogy.
Orr is such a pussy ... ( 2 weeks ago by BillieBobSmith)
Orr is such a pussy, he only tried to punch when the refs were holding on to Keith. Keith would have killed that overrated pussy. Orr played when the NHL was a beer league, he couldn't compete in Wayne's day. Gretzky is the greatest player ever to play the game. Orr would be average by todays standards.
Hey Billy Bob ... ( 2 weeks ago by spercoco)
Hey Billy Bob Thorton. If you watch the video (with both eyes that is) you'll notice Orr was right on Magnusen as soon as that pussy hit Sanderson. He clocked him a bunch of times before the referee save Magnusens' life but Orr wasn't quite finished yet. He gave that looser a few more smacks for good measure.
Wow...I never knew ... ( 1 week ago by stonethemason)
Wow...I never knew Orr was a dirty player. Not only did he blindside Magnusson at full speed, but he nailed him quite a few times while the refs were holding Magnussons arms and Orr was free.
Bobby was ... ( 1 week ago by stonethemason)
Bobby was revolutionary, we cant take that away from him. But he did come along at a time when NHLers didnt really train that hard and most were pretty much out of shape... few goalies wore masks , the players were smallish by todays standards and they didnt hit very hard, they skated really slow.
I mean, no ... ( 1 week ago by stonethemason)
I mean, no disrespect to Gordie Howe, but he was the fighting champ of the NHL from 1954 until he retires for chrissakes, how tough a league was that? If you look at a "greatest plays" compilation of Bobby orr, the guys he plays against are REALLY slow. As for being a "HYPER" strong league...I think the USSR dispelled that belief in 1972. . Had Orr played in the 80s and 90s....yeah...maybe 150-160 assists. But had Gretzky played in Orrs era, he probably would have had 200 assists.
what nonsense, ... ( 1 week ago by caesarcerf)
what nonsense, stone the mason. yvonne corneuyer, bobby hull, gilbert perreau and MANY others were as fast on the terrible tube steel skates of that era as the players of today. also, if the players didn't train hard - which according to Don Cherry the Bruins coach is not the case, then orr would have suffered an out of shape team. goalies did wear masks, you're wrong on the facts, sheesh!
... and 'like' ... ( 1 week ago by caesarcerf)
... and 'like' players like greg sheppard who played in what you imagine as the 'old' era all the way to what you regard as the 'new' era says the players in the old era of FEW teams were the ULTRA-ELITE. the old gordie howe adage is true: if ANY coach could take ANY six players in the history of the NHL including Gretsky (whose plus/minus sucked while orr's was FAR the best) and Lamieux, ANY six players no coach of stature has every said anything but, "i'll take the six orrs."
again, stone the ... ( 1 week ago by caesarcerf)
again, stone the mason, you don't know what you're talking about. no coaches now or then believe that the league was anything but stronger in the years of just SIX teams you bloody idiot. gordie howe was a terror - just ask today's enforcers who they would never wanted to have matched up against. gretsky's TERRIBLE plus minus tells the tale: can't skate fast, weak, timid, a superb passer, terrible defender. yvonne cornyeurer was as fast as Bourre and Orr caught him in two strides.
