I couldn't agree more with each of your points. A Vox electric 12 with a whammy bar, at that! Around 1980 or so I dug deep into the music of the Buffalo Springfield, Byrds, Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, etc. But these guys were something really special. Neat how Tony Hicks used the Vox to mimic the studio versions' slap-echo banjo lines. I'd love to snag a copy of that Everly Bros. LP where the Hollies backed them up, "Two Yanks In England."

There was a UK band called Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers, c1963, who had no fewer that FOUR of these guitars in the line-up!! (But it didn't bring them any hits and they soon faded out.)

The Hollies is one of the most underrated pop rock band.Bobby Elliot a superb drummer.Allan Clarke...well...Allan was the top of the top Although unusually the musical press has always ignored him. A guitar sounding like a banjo, the voices are awesome, fantastic, the chorus pursuing the Allan Clarke tune, incredible, one of the best 10 song pop ever, just The Hollies could sing this way, nobody else neither the beatles

Long Cool Woman is approaching 1.000.000 of visits here in you tube. Also, if we add the visits of all the The Hollies songs, they reach a number that is overcome only by Beatles and Stones, equalling The Who. Nevertheless, I do not see that the specializing magazines have perceived this real phenomenon! It is incredible !!

Tony Hicks played a banjo on the recording but I notice that he's using a Vox Phantom 12-string in the live version. Either way his sound is quite unique. It's also neat to see Graham Nash on the left of Allan Clarke singing high harmony. Beautiful stuff.

I was never keen on the Beatles as singers, their stuff was always better when someone else sung it, but certainly Allan Clarke sings better than any Beatles did. Just my own opinion.
