Wrong style of shamisen for the music he's playing. Tsugaru-jamisen music is very percussive and loud. The player sometimes slams the bachi (plectrum) onto the strings with as much strength as they can muster, so the instrument has to be able to take a few hits; the neck, strings, and body are thicker, stronger, etc.
