this a short film made by jem cohen featuring elliott smith. the film was recorded october 17-20, 1996 in portland, oregon, and released in 1997.
lucky three was made available on kill rock stars' video fanzine #1 release (1999, out of print). smith described lucky three as "a cross between a video and a documentary, but actually being neither of the two." subscribe to my favorites and/or videos if you want to keep in touch. :) xo sources

It doesn't seem possible that five years have passed. Elliott left a hole in the world when he took off - maybe it will always be here. I drove past Elliott's wall earlier, and it remains, five years later, as a testament to all he left and the lives that will be forever changed because he was here.

Today has brought up plenty of emotions. I spent pretty much every possible minute listening to his music. This video reminds me of the Portland that existed when he lived here; sleepy, wet, almost desolate but you could find a bunch of your friends living in a Victorian house on just about any street. The city of Portland is still here, but his special Portland went with him. Listening to his music is the only way I can keep those memories alive. Elliott was our favorite son.. we miss him.

Elliott was like, a king of musical talent. I cant believe, him out of all people had to be stabbed.. Even if it was him committing suicide, or his Gf killing him, i vote he should still be alive. I am the same way. I just listen to Elliott Smith right now. Noone around me can understand why and I can't either. "Addicted" is a good word for it because the music overcomes you and takes you to a very good but bittersweet place. I think he got close to the truth, a very elusive truth coming from the core of his life.

Lol. It shouldn't matter to you. Really winds me up when people come to Elliott's videos just to have a dig at him and his fans. I hate "fall out boy" and "My chemical romance", I think their fans are pathetic emo teenagers who can't quite grasp what real music is. Yet, I don't go to their videos purposefully to insult them. That's just sad.

Thanks. I try not to listen to those bands, I'm too old. But I was a really stupid teenager myself so I wouldn't try to lift myself up by putting them down. Anyway, as I listen to Smith every day I realize he had to make music to live. A real artist. Real music communicates real feeling, which is what gets to people and makes them cry. (Yes I cry when listening to Elliott's music)!

Nothing to be ashamed of. I'm sure everyone here has cried listening to his music at some point or another. :) And I completely agree. Seems like Elliott wrote about and communicates exactly what he was feeling at the time whereas you can tell some other song writers are intentionally trying to inspire a certain emotion and send some stupid message. Can be construed as manipulative almost. It's all about expression, not about getting someone to feel a certain way IMO.

first off fall out boy is POP. my chemical romance ... POP. emo = rites of spring ... mineral kind of ... tguk ... kind of ... it was a post hardcore movement that its early stages sounded more like hardcore/punk music. elliott smith was more of a folk artist. he started off in a punk band way back in the day though that was "emoish"

The point I was making was that it is pathetic to come here or to visit another video with the sole intention/purpose of insulting the artist and the artist's fans which seemed to fly over your head. Though I disagree with your statement, atleast about "My chemical romance" but that really bares no relevance to what I was trying to say.
